The essential allotment kit

With our useful guide, you'll be harvesting your own crops in no time

Seeds You'll need to buy them first time round, then after your first harvest, collect your own seeds and store in envelopes until it's planting time

Gloves Every grower needs a pair of sturdy gloves to protect hands from blisters and dirt

Tools A small fork and trowel are essential for weeding and planting. Stand them in a bucket of dry sand to prevent rust

Dibber You'll need this to make holes in the sole for seeds and cuttings. Invest in a rust-resistant one

Measuring sticks Find two sticks roughly the same size. Tie them together with a long length of string and use your new tool to sow seeds in straight lines

Trug A wooden trug makes it easy to carry your freshly picked fruit and veg back to the kitchen

Plastic labels Clearly mark out where your crops are planted. Write the labels in pencil and you can re-use them year after year
